I am 72 years old and not once in my life have I ever needed to pay a late fee or finance – I have always paid in full and on time. My credit is great.
A few months ago I was in a home deport store when the cashier suggested I open a Home Depot credit card to get a discount on my purchases. I made one purchase on this account (card) that day and have not made any purchases since. This purchase was for $24.62
Last week (6/5/15) to my dismay I received a statement that had a huge balance of $88.24 and included more than one late fee. On that same day my daughter helped me call customer service – since this made no sense to me. We explained that this was the first statement I had seen with a late charge – and that I had paid online [On April 8th through my bank] when the very first statement arrived. The rep was willing to remove only one late payment. I insisted that we speak to a supervisor, who surely could fix this situation. It got worse from there. Gerry [ID# GH63222] basically said I had to prove I did not get the statement. This is illogical.
How can I prove NOT having something that I NEVER had? Admittedly the online payment may have never gone through – however I never got a statement demonstrating this. Now I owe a late fee that is more than my purchase. I am incensed on how I was treated. To be fair I paid the original balance on the phone with the supervisor, but not the late payment they say I owe. I believe I should not be liable to pay this late fee.
